When Motherhood Takes an Unplanned Path: Trusting God with What Lies Ahead

I’m excited to share this more vulnerable and personal piece with you all. I wrote this during a hard season that I walked recently in my life. I literally sat down and wrote this in one sitting. I really feel like God gave me these words to express where my heart was, yet affirm what I know to be true (feelings aside), In Him.
As birth workers, moms, sisters, women… I guess really anyone living in reality - the road of life can be hard to walk. It's not if, but when, we will find ourselves on paths we would never have chosen for ourselves. But as a Christ follower, I am a firm believer that all roads have passed through my Father’s hands - for my good, and more importantly His Glory in His story. I hope this piece I wrote encourages you to trust God’s plan for your life.
As a first-time pregnant momma, quickly learning the lesson that there is A LOT not in our control, as things pop up in your pregnancy or birth that you never expected…
As a mom who is unexpectedly looking at those two pink lines on a test...
As a new mom who has been up all night and can’t drink enough coffee to get rid of the “hangover” feeling, wondering if you’ll ever sleep again…
As a mom of littles, who is managing a house with the cutest, most destructive humans that have a tendency to “ruin” our well laid plans for the day…
As a mom homeschooling multiple older kids and you just don’t know how you’ll make it through another day meeting the demands each day requires…
As a person, living life…
This is for you.
I hope you are encouraged by it. Maybe this word was just for me - but I have a feeling a lot of us need to be reminded that as we walk the path of life, and as that path goes places we were never anticipating on walking - trust Him, trust the God who created you, who placed you where He did, who gave your purpose to live for Him.
The Horizon
A place so familiar, yet unknown
A place my eyes wander to from the weary road
A place my feet can hesitate, stumble, or simply stop
As I contemplate if I want to go somewhere I do not knownow know
I liked the path my feet were on
God, do I really have to take more steps, toward a destination where I do not know the end?
Will it be hard? Can I bear it? How much pain awaits me there?
These are the questions on my mind, as I look toward the horizon so vast and wide
Some days its colors are golden like the sun, others seem dark and I want to run
But I choose to surrender the horizon into Yahweh’s hands
He knows the end, to Him it’s known
He’s begging me to just let go.
To trust Him, to seek Him with all of my heart, and to set my mind where I understand that I daily rest in the Potter’s Hand
I may not know what the horizon holds… but I know that Yahweh knows
His character is proven true, to trust Him is all that I need to do.
So pick up my feet, take that next step. My God is not bound by human ends.
It might be hard. There will be times I cannot bear it. The pain will hurt from human error.
But this I know without a doubt - God is God and I am not.
He will carry me through - to the coming horizon - and each one after that.
Oh my heart,
Continue to trust.
Continue to seek.
Continue to walk toward that horizon, unknown.
Who knows just how beautiful it will be
Even if it’s hard, burdensome or full of pain - it is worth it to serve YOUR NAME.
